As school begins to wrap up for the summer, teachers and students are left unloading everything from their lockers to their classrooms.  What should they do with all the half used notebooks, gently used binders, old pencils, crayons, non-functioning erasers? Don’t just throw them out!  Think about doing the following and share these ideas with your local school.

-Tear out the unused pages of those notebooks for scrap paper, and use the other parts for art projects

-Empty out the binders (recycle the paper) and reuse them in the next school year

-Collect all the half used crayons and melt them into a new reusable shape (see our previous article on UpCycling Crayons)

-Reuse non-functioning erasers by turning them into stamps instead.  Draw a design on them then cut it out with an art knife.

Save a tree, some money, and give your children a note to year end greening!

Getting Creative After Your Coffee

As the weather gets warmer and the coffee shops roll out their newest frozen-mochajavachino (or something like that), it means there’s going to be a lot of iced-coffee cups coming your way.  Assuming you don’t take your own reusable cup every time you get coffee, you’re going to have to make a decision on what to do with those cups.  Recycle them? Sure, that’s an option.  But what else can we do with those clear plastic cups?

-Reuse them.  They’re usually sturdier than you think, and make great spare glasses for around the house.  Use them at your next party for cocktails or beer.

-Plant in them. They make great planters, and there’s something nice about being able to see all of the soil. Drill some holes in the bottom to allow for drainage – and keep it elevated enough to allow water to drain out. Alternatively, flip them over and use them as a terrarium to keep your plants warm and moist in the cool night air.

-Get crafty! There are plenty of things you could do with them, and don’t forget that they’re already circles!  Consider cutting them into bracelets and wrapping them in fabric or spray paint to make flashy bracelets for the kids.

Eat, Grill and be Green

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  No, no, the OTHER most wonderful time of the year.  That’s right... Read

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  No, no, the OTHER most wonderful time of the year.  That’s right – it’s almost Summer, which means barbecue season! Unfortunately, barbecues can mean a lot of waste.  Here are some ways to green up your barbecue for those festive occasions:

-Go Local! Buying local ingredients supports your local farmers, but it also has benefits to you. It usually means fresher veggies and fruits – which means it hasn’t been on the truck as long.  If you shop at your local farmers market, you can usually talk to the farmers or their family directly about how their food is grown and which of their produce is organic.

-Consider Solar Lights. They’ve come down in price quite drastically in the last few years, and come in many forms.  Consider some solar light stakes, or these lovely Pagoda Solar Lanterns from Bambeco.  Just think how nice they would look strung all across your back yard!

-Get a Keg. Okay, if you’re going to serve beer, it makes way more sense to get a keg!  Your beer cost goes way down, while the sustainability factor goes way up. Drinking out of mason jars is also a great idea, as they’re reusable, washable, and it’s not as big of a deal if someone writes their name on one or breaks one.  If you absolutely insist upon the red cup, just wash them afterwards.  They’re not dishwasher safe but will hold up in the sink for 5-10 more uses.

-Use Those Disposables Up. We’re not a fan of using disposable anything.  Even if it’s recycled, it’s still so wasteful!  But you’ve undoubtedly gotten plenty of disposable napkins and cutlery from your favorite takeout place. Now’s a good time to use those up.  You can even wash those afterwards and use them a few more times.

-Consider Cloth. Cloth napkins will really class up your party, and won’t end up in the landfill.  They’re not expensive, and you can even make your own out of fabric scraps, old jeans, etc.
Now get out there and show your green gang just how well you grill!”

In a push to green-up an industry that’s already not-so-green, Chrysler has recognized 30 of its more eco-friendly auto dealers across the U.S. – and more than a third of which are in, you guessed it: California.  Some of the achievements recognized include:

– A 2,000 square foot solar system in Arkansas

– A heating system based on used motor oil from oil changes in Michigan

– Collection and recycling of rain water in Oklahoma

For a full list of the honored dealers (just in case you’re in the market for a new Chrysler), check out the press release.

“We all hate it. We’ve all complained about it.  After a vacation away, we dread it – Junk Mail.  In fact, we spend about 8 months of our lives opening junk mail.

So what do you do about all of those credit card offers and catalogs? Sure, we can recycle them – but there’s got to be a way to get to the source, right?

There are several services out there whose main goal is to reduce junk mail, including DMAchoice.org, who can help you opt out of catalogs, donation requests and magazine offers.  There’s also OptOutPrescreen.com, who can help you opt out of all of those annoying credit card offers.

Not comfortable giving out even more personal information? Then consider this neat upcycling idea from CraftingAGreenWorld.com, which demonstrates how to make a notebook out of junk mail!”

Solar panels are everywhere these days; on your roof, in the fields, on the sides of buildings, on eco-friendly cars, and even sprawling across hillsides and mountain sides.  You may or may not have noticed that they’re a few more places now.  Check out these additional ways to utilize Solar (no leasing model required):

“Array” Solar Backpack from Voltaic

This behemoth of a backpack can charge your laptop while on the go – and store it too. That way, you can charge up while riding your bike, at an outdoor conference, or while camping with the family. It also charges cellphones, portable gaming systems, and tablets – and at a modest $389, it’s a small price to pay to have independence from the outlet.

“Brighta30” Street Lamp

Cities are rapidly adopting this new way to light the streets. It’s not only green, but extremely cost efficient when you consider how many streetlights are in your town or city. We also see them coming up across college and corporate campuses.  The Brighta30 (featured above) is from Greenshine, who specializes in solar lighting solutions – from garden lights to full-scale city lighting.

“Soulra” Solar Powered Boombox from Eton

Solar Powered Boomboxes are a great idea in the summer, considering you don’t have to have an outlet to power it – making your family picnic or weekend bonfire the happenin’ place to be! This one from Eton is only $150 and is iPod and iPhone compatible, but also has an audio input line. Oh and for a limited time, it comes with a free messenger bag to carry it!

There you have it – if you’re not ready to go solar (or even if you are…), there are great ways to still show your love for Photovoltaics!”

“Commercials for synthetic air fresheners feature consumers blindfolded in the middle of garbage, innocently sniffing the air, and declaring it smells like a spring meadow.  I always wonder what’s more toxic, the garbage or the spray that often contain hazardous ingredients that you don’t want floating around your home.

Consider some non-toxic, economical green products:

  • Orange slices, lemon slices, cinnamon, mint, cloves, or any other herb in boiling water on the stove
    • Create your own “Febreeze” by combining the following in a reusable spray bottle:
      • 12-15 drops of pure essential oil (lavender, peppermint, grapefruit)
      • 1/2 cup white vinegar
      • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Consider an eco-friendly scented candle made from soy or beeswax. They’re eco-friendly and this one from Yves Rocher smells wonderful!

-Give mom control of the TV remote – If she wishes to watch cooking shows all day, let her be

-Handmade cards – always a winner

-Skip brunch out and prepare a special meal in – just make sure you do all the heavy lifting!

-Use eco-friendly frames with pictures of mom and her all her favorite people (that’s you!)

-Create special memories, a nice nature walk with the family, trip to an art gallery, etc.

“You’ve seen the Solar calculator.  Now check out the Computer calculator. No, it’s not in your “Start” menu.  Rather, it’s a calculator created by Utah-based firm, Xi3 – to show you how much you could be saving (not by going solar, but rather, by going modular).

Xi3 claims that their new “modular” computer uses up to 95% less energy than the average household computer – at a modest 20 Watts of electricity to operate.

In fact, the savings calculator isn’t the only thing they have in common with solar installers. Xi3 also offers a leasing option (cleverly named “ecolease“), in which it claims that the potential energy savings (mostly for small-medium sized businesses) actually offset the monthly lease payments – which they call “Getting a Free Computer”.

Another added benefit of the system is its ability to run multiple instances of the operating system on several linked-up machines.

So if you’re looking for a way to cut down on the power bill and you’re not quite ready to go solar, maybe green-tech is the way to go!”

Shiny hair. Forget expensive leave-in conditioners! Massage some mayo into your scalp, cover with a shower cap, wait five minutes, and shampoo.  Your hair will be all sorts of shiny.

Strong nails.  It’s this simple: plunge them into a bowl of mayo for five minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Glowing complexion. Gently spread whole-egg mayonnaise on the visage.  Rinse after 20 minutes.

You’ll look fabulous when you head to the curb to recycle the jar!”

“The US military is green…and we aren’t talking about the color of the camouflage.

According to Reuters, US Military bases are looking into the gradual implementation of large-scale alternative energy installations across the US.  The “mix” of energy will come primarily from Solar, wind, and geothermal sources.  With more than 1,000 military bases in the United States alone, the Department of Defense’s energy usage amounts to over 30,000 Giga-watt hours (GWH) per year – that’s a lot.

But that’s not all – the US Army also recently opened their greenest lab complex ever focused on developing more fuel efficient vehicles.  The Ground Systems Power and Energy Lab (or GSPEL) will employ about 150 army scientists, researchers, and engineers to focus on hybrid vehicle development.

While the purpose of this endeavor is not intended to make the military more “green”, but rather to reduce the military’s dependence on the grid at critical moments, we’re all for the unintentional benefit of renewable energy and reduced carbon footprint!  Hoo-Rah!”

Earth Day Ideas for Everyone

“Before you start planning your Mother’s day festivities, it’s time to say “Thanks!” to your OTHER mom.  You know, Mother Earth!  She’s been great and she’s done a lot for you.  Sure, she has temper tantrums once in a while, but if we don’t take care of her now, she won’t be around for too long (relatively speaking).

Okay, innuendo aside, it’s time to consider how you’ll celebrate Earth Day this Sunday!  Here are a few ideas (and just to prove we walk the walk, we’ll be doing these as well).

Walk, don’t drive
Plan ahead so that you don’t have to drive anywhere on Sunday. Spare the air your carbon emissions, just for one day!  If you have stores or coffee shops within walking distance, consider those instead.

Lose the Appliances
We rarely think about the chain of events that goes into something as simple as turning on the television – but chances are that at least some of your electricity comes from fossil fuels.  You’ll be surprised at everything you can get done without running appliances.

-Eat raw so that you don’t have to cook
-Use candles for lights (it’s romantic, and kind of like camping!)
-Skip the TV and read a book.  Storytelling is a great way to entertain even the little ones

Plant something
We understand that planting a tree doesn’t work for everyone (especially us urbanites).  That said, planting SOMETHING is still feasible.  Plants add much needed Oxygen to the atmosphere, and attract your friendly neighborhood bee for local pollination.

Now get out there and show “mom” (the older one) how much you love her!”

“Obviously, it’s a better choice to “choose organic” as much as possible.  But when organic choices aren’t available, or don’t necessarily make it into the grocery budget, which organic products should we consider over others?

Meat, Dairy & Eggs
Organic meat, dairy & eggs cannot be raised with growth hormones, and the animals aren’t fed with anything grown with pesticides. Even more importantly, animals raised organically aren’t given antibiotics, which means they don’t develop any antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Potatoes & Peppers
Non-organic potatoes are treated with twice the amount of chemicals, including pesticides and fungicides.  Fungicides are added directly to the roots (which is, the potato itself).  Peppers, alternatively, have such thin skins that they absorb pesticides more quickly than other fruits and vegetables.

Baby Food
It pretty much goes without saying that, when it comes to our little ones, the food we put in them should be just as gentle as the products we use on them.  Babies don’t have the immune systems we do and can’t handle the harsh chemicals on food as well as we can.

So when you make your next grocery list, consider investing a little more in the important things – You’ll be glad you did.”

“Make your own beauty products?  Sounds hard, but it’s actually quite simple.  Aside from saving a little money, many commercially produced beauty products are packed with nasty chemicals that can do damage to your body.  As mentioned in our Caring About Personal Care article  (link to article), there are Parabens, Phthalates, Tricolosan, Oxybenzone and Formaldehyde in many of the beauty products we use every day. We are Doing A bit Better here by making a few of our own. We promise these DYI beauty products are as easy as going to your kitchen and pulling a few things together.

Homemade Perfume

An easy way to smell delicious in a snap is to grab a sauce pan, lemon juice and vanilla extract.  Mix the two, heat them up and you’ll have a sweet homemade fragrance just like that.  Pour the rest in a glass jar for continued use.

Use Vegetable Oil to Condition Your Hair
Is there anything vegetable oil can’t do?  In addition to being used for cooking and fueling some cars, it can also work as an amazing conditioner for your hair.  Grab some all-natural oil (organic is the best), pour in your hand, rub at the scalp and then comb through to the ends.  Let sit a few minutes and rinse.  You’ll be left with soft conditioned hair!

Exfoliate with Strawberries
We can all use exfoliation once and a while – after all, it’s a great way to make your skin feel baby-fresh.  So instead of reaching for store bought exfoliant, why not just grab some strawberries?  Strawberries have natural fruit acid that helps in exfoliation of your skin. All you need is 8-10 berries, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of coarse salt (sea, kosher, etc).  Mix all the ingredients together and then massage it on your hands, feet, face or any place that needs a gentle scrub.

Make Your Own All Natural Lip Gloss
Looking for a clean, fresh gloss to sooth those dry lips and make them shine too?  Make your own lip gloss by mixing 1 teaspoon of fresh aloe vera gel with 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil and 1/8 teaspoon of vitamin E oil. Stir until smooth, then use right away, storing the rest for later.

Homemade Deodorant
Homemade deodorant is easy as sprinkling a little baking soda onto a damp wash cloth, and applying it to your underarms. It’ll keep you fresh throughout the day!

These are just a few ways to look and feel good naturally and to know that you are Doing A bit Better!”

“While we think it’s important to protect your furry friends all year ‘round, the warmer temperatures of Spring often signal the official start to flea & tick season.  More than just a tough itch to scratch, these blood-sucking parasites can transmit pathogens and diseases to your pet and you.  But rather than subject your pet to a chemical plunge, here are a few tips to keeping the fleas & ticks away naturally.

–          For starters, regularly bathe your pet.  When doing so, be sure to use a gentle, all natural shampoo to avoid irritating your pet’s skin & eyes.  For flea & tick treatment, we like Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Conditioner.  And be sure to rinse your pet’s coat thoroughly to remove all the suds!

–          Gently brush your pet daily with a fine tooth comb.  This will both help comb out the critters and also allow you to see any ticks lurking in the fur.  Check out the GripSoft Flea Comb. When you do find a flea, drop it in a bucket of soapy water to kill it and stop the spread of eggs.

–          Clean where your pet snoozes.  Vacuum the areas where your pet sleeps and the fleas and their eggs may be living.  Also, wash your pet’s bed at least once a week in hot soapy water to help further kill off the eggs.

–          If the problem persists, use an herbal flea collar.  Made with essential oils to repel fleas & ticks, these cheap, easy solutions knock out the problem, and don’t smell too bad either!  We recommend the Natural Research People Herbal Collar.”

Throw an Eco-friendly Party

“With warm, sunny summer weather quickly approaching, we here at DAbB are really looking forward to some great summer parties.... Read

“With warm, sunny summer weather quickly approaching, we here at DAbB are really looking forward to some great summer parties. Friends, music, drinks, & BBQ – what could be better?  But all the fun and festivities of a classic summer party can produce a lot of waste (and who wants that?).  So here are 5 tips to reduce the waste without reducing the fun:

–              Plastic drink cups can result in a huge amount of garbage, especially in larger groups where guests are apt to set a cup down and forget about it.  To solve this dilemma, rent glassware from a local party supply rental company.  This will eliminate all waste created by plastic cups and give your party a truly classy touch!  If you don’t have a party rental store in the area, use compostable, corn-based plastic cups.

–              When it comes to the food, stay local!  Some of the best produce, meat, and dairy products can be found at your local farmers market.  They’re fresher, tastier, and often cheaper!

–              When it comes to the brew, pop for a keg or pony-keg if the group is large enough.  It’s less likely that you’ll run out mid-party and you won’t have to worry about all those bottles & cans to be recycled.

–              If you are serving wine, aim for organic.  Some of our favorite organic vinos are Grgich Hills, Frog’s Leap, Frey Vineyards, and Benziger.

–              Be creative when it comes to decorations!  Smooth river rocks or large leaves from your yard are a great alternative to traditional place cards.  Large jars or hurricane vases can be filled with household items to make for fun custom centerpieces.

–              When it comes to invites, Evites are definitely the greenest method, but may lack the personal touch you seek for your party.  One solution is to scan in and email out a handmade invitation.  This allows you to add a personal touch that your guests are sure to remember.  Alternatively, you can also send out traditional invitations made of recycled paper & materials.  The result is both memorable and eco-friendly!

Party on!”

Monday Tip of the Week – Being a Greener Professional

“Sometimes we get so caught up in our day-to-day, that we forget about our better-living-goals when we’re on the go.  Here are some reminders and possibly new ideas that can get you going!

Morning Coffee
If you’re not the type to make your own coffee in the morning (which could potentially save you over $300 a year), then you’re probably stopping into the local coffee shop before you hit the office.  Here are some ways to Do A bit Better at your java-stop:

-Bring your own cup.  You’ll get a discount on your coffee, and you’ll stop seeing those white paper cups pile up in your recycling bin

-Skip the sleeve – If you insist upon the paper cup, consider not using the sleeve or reusing the sleeve.  There’re also a variety of reusable silicone sleeves for sale across the net.

-Pour it, don’t packet! Sugar packets and stir sticks add up. Pour your sugar from the provided dispenser instead of tearing open a few packets, and let nature do the stirring for you. If you keep your sugar and milk at the office, it will stay hotter longer.

Lunch time!
If you work downtown, you’ll notice how many people scuffle around in a hurry to get their lunch and go. You’ll also notice everyone carrying a paper bag, with a sandwich also wrapped in paper inside – followed by a paper soda cup. That’s a LOT of waste. Consider this, instead:

-Bring a reusable bag – they’re not just for grocery shopping anymore!

-Skip the soda – on top of it being incredibly bad for you anyway, those soda cups pile up in the landfill. We have a water carbonator in our office to substitute for soda, and the carbonated water helps trick our bodies into thinking we’re drinking something more sugary! Win-win.

Meetings
You’ll impress your clients and business partners if you look a little greener!

-Don’t provide bottled water – leave some empty glasses and a pitcher of water on the table for all to enjoy.

-Put your presentation on a thumb drive – all of those paper versions you pass out will likely just get tossed out anyway.  If you HAVE to print it, print on both sides to use half as much paper!

Now you’re on your way to being the model professional for a better world!”

Remodeling Your Home?

“If you are looking to do any home remodeling this year, do yourself (and the planet) a favor and opt... Read

“If you are looking to do any home remodeling this year, do yourself (and the planet) a favor and opt for a few green upgrades.  Now, we’re not saying you need to tear down your house and rebuild it to be Leed Certified.  But there are a few choices you can make to add value to your home and to Do A bit Better for Mother Nature.

Seal It Up
One of the biggest wastes of energy comes from window & door drafts.  Sealing off these leaks can reduce your energy usage & costs by anywhere from 5 to 30 percent!  Solutions vary – some small leaks may be solved simply by adding weather stripping or caulk, but more extensive jobs may require repairing or replacing windows & doors

Look for the Energy Star logo
Appliances are going to be one of the bigger expenses on a remodel list, so if you are going to invest in them, make sure to purchase Energy Star certified models.  The certification, managed by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy, helps consumers take the guesswork out of finding an appliance that is highly efficient (read: saves you cash) and also good for the environment. Plus, with over 18,000 certified products across 35 different categories, you won’t have to go searching high & low to find one that fits your budget & style.

Low Flow
We’re not going to bore you with facts about how much water is wasted each year from showers & toilets in the US.  So just know that low flow toilets and showers are a great way to save money and cut down on water waste.  For your porcelain throne, look for 1.6 Gallons/flush and 2 button flush option.  And for the shower heads, look for options with volume dials or buttons – in doing so, you can save up to 70% each time you bathe.

Lay Down the Bamboo
Bamboo’s not just for red ceramic pots with gold Chinese characters anymore! If you are going to do some more extensive remodeling and start replacing your floors, bamboo is a great choice.  First and foremost, bamboo is a highly sustainable product, so you don’t have to feel like you are chopping down the rainforest to freshen up your living room.  Secondly, they look great and are available in a wide range of sizes & colors.  Lastly, carbonized bamboo is hard and durable, so you’ll worry less about scratches when you put your furniture back in place.”

“A few weeks ago, we described our love for the sexy, new Fisker Karma.  So we wanted to feed your need for green speed with three more amazing eco-machines:

Toyota  TS030 Hybrid
To put it lightly, this ain’t your aunt Millie’s Prius.  Honda’s first ever hybrid LeMan’s car debuted in January and has been generating tons of buzz.  With the sport predominantly championed by diesel engines, Honda is banking on their Hybrid cars’ ability to run more laps without needing to refuel.  We can’t wait to see this eco-friendly, carbon fiber beauty put to the test in June at the famous 24 Hours of Le Man race.

Code X Luxury Hybrid Yacht
For the boaters in the world, we bring you the Code X Luxury Hybrid Yacht.  Looking like something out of a 007 movie, this 47 foot floating green machine touts touch screen controls, 710HP solar hybrid power system, and a GPS controlled “virtual anchor” system that will keep it in position regardless of conditions.

Zero Motorcycles MX

Ok, so, technically the Zero MX isn’t a hybrid…its better.  It’s all electric!  That means it’s lightweight & plenty fast.  And no need to worry about sounding like a mosquito buzzing in a megaphone because this baby is silent!  Plus, you can leave your battery on the charger for hours, days, even months (if you are away from home). It’s ready to go when you are, and plugs into any standard 110 or 220 volt outlet.  Starting at just $9,495, the Zero MX is ready to rip up the track when you are!
